St. George and
the Dragon
Welcome to the website of
the St. George Orthodox Church of India - Sacramento,
California. We are a parish under the American Diocese
of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of India. The
Orthodox Church of India is an ancient church, which was
established in Kerala, India, in 52 A.D. by the Apostle
St. Thomas, one of the twelve disciples of our Lord
Jesus Christ. The Orthodox Church of India is under the
leadership of the Catholicos of the East with its
headquarters at Devalokam, Kottayam, Kerala, India.
The Orthodox Church in India is one of the
thirty seven Apostolic churches dating from the time of the disciples of
Christ, and it has a long and ancient history. Also known as the the
Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, it is autonomous and autocephalous.
Today, it belongs to the family of the Oriental Orthodox Churches, which
include the Armenian, Coptic, Ethiopian and the Syrian Orthodox
Churches, and then to the wider stream of the world's Orthodox Churches.
The Sacramento parish of the Malankara
Orthodox Syrian Church enables members of our Church who live in the
Greater Sacramento area in Northern California, to participate in
Orthodox worship and services. Rev. Fr. V. T. Thomas ministers to the
parish in the Sacramento area.
